Field: Group Work 1

The new subject I will be working on is Field. The class was divided into groups of 3 or 4 and given the task of creating a piece of work that was based on everybody’s ideas for Outside Inside.

My group ( Elizabeth, Sashi and Jack) discussed our ideas and found the recurring theme was mental illness or how the brain can feel different feelings. We decided to paint a brain and scratch words and thoughts from all of our ideas into the paint. We then used nails and hammered them into the brain and along the board. Then string was attached to the nails to connect each nail together.

Then, we joined a second group and put our ideas together with their ideas to create a collaboration between the two groups. The group we were joined with looked at rape and how it affects victims. They also looked at fairy tales and used an apple, like Snow White whilst also adding bananas to write facts about rape, and quotes from fairytales.

We decided to use their bananas and hit them with a hammer covered in red paint. We used paper to collect the paint and the mashed banana like the aftermath of feelings of rape and mental illness.

Sashi hitting the bananas

We used nails from my original groups project to pin the bananas to the wall. The red paint was used to indicate anger, blood and violence.

Whilst Sashi was hitting the bananas, a few of us recorded it for the film to be projected.

I think the film that is projected onto the wall and bananas capture the violence of hitting the bananas, like the aggression behind rape, or how being a sufferer of mental illness can sometimes feel. The paper has an unintentional cut through it where the paper moved whist hitting the bananas, this adds more aggression accidentally.
